the tunes:
I did not know what to expect after my disappointment with No Doubt. However I was pleasantly surprised by this album and it now rates as one of my all time favorites. Any of the shortcomings that were present on the first praise record are fixed here. This album is a band album. It sounds like a band doing their own praise music, not a band providing music for a praise album.
“Lord I Lift Your Name On High” is the high point of the album (minus the echoes at the end). It is the rock sound that I think we all want Petra to focus on. Guitar and drums front and center with John Schlitt’s vocals doing the work. I loved it! I wanted more, more, more. As a matter of fact the only song I did not like was "Let Our Voices Rise Like Incense”. Every other song is awesome both as praise and worship, and as rock and roll. The boys (whoever they were at this point), break into some good instrumentals and show the same flavor that I saw at the end of the Wake-Up Call album. This is the sound that they should have gone with for the No Doubt album. I really believe Petra’s popularity would not have suffered as much if they had gone with this type of sound sooner (keeping the classic lineup intact would have helped also).
Whether you are looking for straight Praise and Worship, or just good rock and roll, this album hits the mark. I highly recommend it for Petheads and non-Petheads alike. Load it in the CD player and enjoy.
